What is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare is health insurance provided through the federal government. It is sometimes called "traditional" Medicare. Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B.
Who is eligible for Medicare Parts A and B? Most people age 65 and older, who are U.S. citizens or legal residents for at least five consecutive years. People younger than 65 with certain qualifing disabilities. People of all ages with end-stage renal disease.
Things to know:
Medicare is an 80/20 Plan
Deductibles apply for Part A and B both
Most people have a monthly premium for part B
Medicare does not cover things like Prescription Drugs, Eye glasses, Hearing aids, dental
How do complete my coverage and make sure I get all the extra benefits?
Consider a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan (MAPD) Called Part C Or a Medicare Supplement Plan
What is Medicare Part C?
Medicare Part C is also called Medicare Advantage. It is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted by Medicare. By joining an Advantage plan, You will receive your benefits through the plan instead of through Original Medicare. These plans offer Copays rather than the typical 20 percent, making your costs more predictable. Example: You might have a copay of 15.00 for an x ray rather than 20 percent.
Learn how Medicare Advantage plans offer hospital and medical coverage along with additional benefits that you don’t get with Original Medicare, for example, vision, hearing and prescription drug coverage.
To be eligible for a Medicare Advantage plan you must:
Have Medicare Part A and Part B.
Live in the plans service area (Maricopa County, Arizona) for example, Continue to pay the Medicare Part B premium if not otherwise paid for under Medicaid or by another third party.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are secondary to original medicare. Each plan has a monthly premium depending on the Plan you choose. Plans Range by letters A-N. Each letter offers a different percentage of coverage. The monthly premium is in addition to your Medicare Part B. These plans fill in some of what original Medicare does not pay.
Example: Jamie visits the Primary care Doctor. Medicare pays 80% of the bill after her deductible, Her supplement Plan F paid her deductible and the remaining 20 percent. You will also want to sign up for a Part D Drug plan so that you don't risk a penalty. You can not have a Supplement AND a Medicare Advantage plan. You choose one or the other. Talk to your agent about what best suites your needs.
